Nollywood actress Sotayo Gafa has shared a troubling experience involving repeated attempts by unknown individuals who allegedly impersonated people within her professional circle to solicit money from her via direct messages.
According to her account, the incident unfolded over time, with different messages arriving under the guise of familiar names. The requests appeared urgent and emotionally driven, ranging from school fee challenges to housing difficulties. Believing the situations were genuine and driven by compassion, she reportedly sent part of her business funds to assist.
It was only later that she discovered the truth that the individuals she tried to help were not her colleagues and had no knowledge of the conversations or requests made in their names.
The realization came after she eventually met and spoke with the actual colleagues being impersonated, who confirmed they had never reached out to her for financial help.
Disturbed by the experience, she expressed frustration over the deceit and the emotional manipulation involved.
In her words:
“So Few days ago some set of people or its possible it was the same person has been coming into my DM, using my colleagues names to scammed me
There was a time this person came and said she wanted to pay her children school fees, another person came again and said she had accommodation problem, l had send Part of my business money to her because l pity their situation.
I never knew they were lieing to me, they weren’t my colleagues, not until l saw these people and l asked how they are doing, they later explained to me, they have never came into my DM to ask for money.
This is becoming too much, but whosoever is the person that came to lie to me, using my colleagues names, that person will kpai suddenly, 5hat person will run m@d and will suff£r..l….”
The actress’s revelation has since sparked conversations around online impersonation scams and the emotional tactics often used to defraud unsuspecting victims.
