The Nigeria Revenue Service, in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board, has launched a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable persons in the country as part of efforts to modernise tax administration and improve compliance

The announcement was made in a public notice shared on the agency’s official X account on Monday.

According to the agency, the initiative is backed by Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which makes it mandatory for every taxable person to obtain a Tax ID.

The revenue authority explained that the new system is designed to strengthen tax administration, improve transparency, and harmonise operations across both federal and sub-national tax agencies.

It added that the Tax ID will function as a single unified identity for all taxpayers, allowing smoother interaction with tax authorities at different levels of government.

“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the agency said.

Officials also noted that the system is expected to reduce duplication of records and improve the overall management of taxpayer information.

“The initiative will simplify tax compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures,” the agency added.
