Nigerian rapper Tobechukwu Melvin Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, has spoken about the significant contributions of the Igbo people to Lagos State’s economy, questioning calls for non-indigenes to leave the commercial hub.
Speaking on the issue of ethnic relations and economic participation in Lagos, the rapper noted that the Igbo community has played a major role in driving trade and commerce across the state.
“The Igbos have contributed so much to the Lagos economy in terms of trade and commerce. I wonder what would happen if you asked every Igbo person to leave,” Illbliss said.
He expressed surprise at statements often directed at non-indigenes in Lagos, particularly statements suggesting that residents who are not natives of the state should return to their places of origin.
“That’s why I’m always surprised when I hear things like, ‘If you’re not from Lagos State, go back to your state,’” he added.
People in Lagos come from different places and still find ways to live and work together. The city runs every day because of that mix. When conversations like this come up, they tend to bring out strong feelings, but they also remind people of how connected everyone is in the same space, whether by birth or by choice to be there.
