Former Anambra State Governor and Nigerian politician and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for dialogue with agitators, saying the continued detention of separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu is unnecessary.
Obi made the remarks during an engagement in Washington, where he stressed that individuals should not be detained merely for expressing political views or speaking on radio.
He said a democratic government should prioritize engagement over confrontation in dealing with dissenting voices.
He said;
“There is no reason for detaining Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. You cannot arrest somebody just because the person is speaking on radio… If I am in government today, I will discuss and engage with all agitators.”
Obi added that he has personally faced criticism in politics but maintained that disagreement should not justify detention.
Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), remains in detention while facing ongoing legal proceedings in Nigeria.
