Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale has shared a calm, detailed recollection of how music executive and singer Davido played a key role in making her son, Mayorkun, famous after first discovering him through a simple cover he recorded and shared.

She said it all started quite simply when Mayorkun visited his cousin in Lekki and spent time in a music room. While there, he recorded a cover of one of Davido’s songs and later put it online.

According to her, she did not expect anything from it at the time. But things changed when Davido reached out after coming across the recording.

She recalled how the family first reacted when the message came in:

“He posted it on the internet and before you know it, it went viral. He did a cover of the ‘Give me the money’ song and posted it on his Instagram, it went viral and got to Davido”, she said.

At first, she said they were unsure about the message, thinking it could be a scam.

“At first, they were like, ‘Is it him or not?’ But the moment they recognised his voice, they jumped in excitement.”

She explained that Davido later called directly and showed interest in Mayorkun’s work. He also asked for his measurements and sent him a box of gifts, which surprised the family.

“So Mayowa sent it, and before you know it, Davido gave him a whole box of gifts.”

Not long after, Mayorkun and his close friend were invited to Davido’s home, where they met him properly and spent time together.

She described the experience in a very simple way, saying Davido was welcoming when they eventually met.

“When I got there, the boy was so pleasant and very respectful. ‘Mummy, Mummy,’ he kept saying.”

She went on to explain that Davido later invited them back, and that was when Mayorkun went into the studio to record what became the song “Eleko.”

According to her, the recording happened over two visits, and it was a smooth process because her son had already been writing music and poetry from before.

Afterward, Mayorkun spent some time around Davido, learning and working closely with him before eventually moving on to start his own independent journey in music.
