Nigerian prisoners held at AbaSamuel Prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, have expressed excitement and gratitude to President Bola Tinubu following the signing of a Prisoner Transfer Agreement between Nigeria and Ethiopia
In a video shared on Saturday by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, the inmates were seen celebrating the development, which will allow eligible Nigerians serving jail terms in Ethiopia to complete their sentences back home.
Sharing the footage on her X page, Ojukwu wrote:
“Thank you, Mr President!
“Nigeria immates in AbaSamuel Prisons, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia express their joy and Appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the successful conclusion of the bilateral Prisoner Transfer Agreement with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.”
The agreement, signed earlier this week by officials of both countries, provides a legal framework for convicted citizens of Nigeria and Ethiopia to be transferred to their respective countries to serve the remainder of their prison terms, subject to agreed conditions and domestic laws.
The Federal Government had earlier revealed that more than 100 Nigerians are currently incarcerated in Ethiopia and are expected to benefit from the arrangement.
The deal was facilitated by the Federal Government through Bianca Ojukwu and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), as part of efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerians serving sentences outside the country.
