The United Kingdom has announced a ban on social media access for teenagers under the age of 16, in a move the Government says is aimed at reducing the growing influence of technology on children’s daily lives

Prime Minister Keir Starmer disclosed the policy in a video message shared on X on Monday, saying the government could no longer allow unchecked digital intrusion into childhood development.

“We are banning social media access for under 16s.

“These days kids must find their feet in a world where technology intrudes into every area of their life.

“I just can’t let that go on anymore. So we’re giving children their childhoods back,” he said in the message attached to the video.

The decision comes amid increasing concerns about the effects of social media on young people’s mental health and overall wellbeing.

The UK government already has legal backing through existing frameworks such as the Online Safety Act and the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026, which allow for the enforcement of age and usage restrictions.
