Keir Starmer: Peter Obi calls for Tinubu’s resignation

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing what he described as worsening economic hardship and insecurity in the country

Obi made the statement on Monday while reacting to the resignation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which he said reflected a culture of accountability in leadership.

He argued that Starmer’s decision to step down followed public dissatisfaction over economic challenges, rising living costs, and unmet campaign promises, adding that similar standards should apply in Nigeria.

The former Anambra State governor recalled that before the 2015 elections, President Tinubu had criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan, urging him to resign over insecurity and economic difficulties, including the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.

Obi also referenced Tinubu’s 2023 campaign promises, including pledges to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption, and enhance citizens’ welfare, noting that the President had reportedly said he should not seek re-election if he failed to deliver on his commitments.

According to him, Nigeria’s situation has deteriorated under the current administration, with rising insecurity, persistent power shortages, kidnappings, and economic hardship affecting citizens across the country.

He further alleged setbacks in key sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, and anti-corruption efforts, saying Nigerians are currently facing severe socio-economic pressure.

“I therefore join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” Obi said.
