The Danish government is considering a nationwide ban on the public broadcast of the Islamic call to prayer, known as the Adhan, according to local media reports
Immigration Minister Morten Bodskov said the government would revisit an investigation into whether such a prohibition would be legally permissible under Danish law.
Speaking to Danish news agency Ritzau, Bodskov said the public call to prayer should not be broadcast across the country. He added that the government was concerned about what it described as the increasing visibility of Islam in public spaces.
“The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops,” Bodskov was quoted as saying.
“It has no place in Denmark, and you shouldn’t be in any doubt whether you’ve ended up in a suburb of Islamabad when you walk around Denmark.”
The proposal marks the third attempt by Danish authorities to explore a legal framework for restricting the public broadcast of the Adhan. Similar efforts were undertaken in 2020 and 2025.
The Adhan is a traditional Islamic call summoning Muslims to prayer and is typically broadcast five times daily from mosque minarets using loudspeakers.
While some Danish municipalities already regulate amplified calls to prayer through local noise restrictions, the government is now examining the possibility of introducing a nationwide ban.
