Fresh legal troubles have emerged for Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, as South African authorities move to deport her from the country over claims that she is staying there unlawfully

Adetshina, 25, was arrested in the Summer Greens area of Cape Town and appeared before the Cape Town Regional Court on June 9. Although the court released her on warning, she is scheduled to appear again on July 16 while immigration officials pursue deportation proceedings against her.

Court filings show that immigration officer Adrian Jackson told the court that Adetshina and her young son were located during an investigation. After questioning her and reviewing records held by the Department of Home Affairs, officials allegedly found that neither of them possesses valid legal status to remain in South Africa.

Based on those findings, Jackson asked the court to validate her detention pending deportation.

The case stems from a series of immigration disputes involving Adetshina. Earlier this year, South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, rejected her request to review the department’s refusal to grant her a letter of good cause.

Schreiber claimed the department notified Adetshina in September 2024 of plans to withdraw both her and her son’s South African identity documents, but alleged that she failed to respond before the deadline expired.

The minister further alleged that she first obtained a Nigerian passport before applying for a South African visitor’s visa. He said the visa request was denied after authorities accused her of submitting a fraudulent bank statement. According to him, she did not challenge that decision and was later classified as a prohibited person under the country’s immigration laws.

He also alleged that Adetshina later crossed into South Africa from Mozambique through the Lebombo border while presenting herself as a South African citizen, adding that her son’s immigration status is linked to her own.

Pending the outcome of the case, the court has directed Adetshina to remain at the residence where she was arrested and to inform immigration authorities of any changes to her home address, employment or travel plans.
