Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has told the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, that no one should be above the law, declaring that security agencies should arrest even his own son if he is ever found to have committed a crime.
The governor made the statement on Friday while receiving the Inspector-General during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Osogbo.
Adeleke’s comments came in response to allegations by the IGP that the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, had informed him that some criminal suspects wanted by the police were allegedly taking refuge at the Government House axis.
Rejecting the allegation, the governor insisted that his administration does not harbour criminals and has maintained a zero-tolerance stance on crime since assuming office.
Adeleke told the police chief that neither his political associates nor members of his family should receive preferential treatment if they break the law.
“If you see any of my people that committed a crime, arrest them. If it is my son who committed a crime, arrest him, let him learn his lesson, and that is what I am saying in front of the IGP.”
While reaffirming his support for law enforcement agencies, Adeleke also raised concerns over what he described as the unprofessional conduct of some police officers.
He cited the reported transfer of a police officer who arrested a suspect linked to the k!lling of a 14-year-old boy in Ilobu, questioning why the officer was moved after carrying out what he described as a lawful assignment.
“But for you to be playing all these games and everything like that, the person that they k!lled, a 14-year-old boy in Ilobu, because the police officer did a good job under the directive of the Inspector General of Police and arrested the suspect that k!lled the boy, you transferred the officer”, he stated.
According to the governor, such actions could discourage officers who act professionally in the line of duty.
Despite his concerns, Adeleke praised Disu for his commitment to discipline and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. He welcomed the IGP’s assurance that acts of indiscipline would not be tolerated and urged officers to enforce the law fairly, without fear, favour or political influence.
He said:
“I am glad the Inspector General of Police is here today, and he has said it openly that he will not tolerate any act of indiscipline, and he has given you a warning that you will not tolerate crime. That is why I am happy.”
The governor said he remains confident that the current police leadership will continue to promote accountability and ensure that justice is served equally to all Nigerians.
