"Why i stopped wishing my colleagues happy birthday - Jaiye Kuti

Actress Jaiye Kuti has expressed how lonely she felt after her movie was removed from several cinemas, revealing that none of her colleagues came out to support her even though many of them have faced similar challenges

Speaking on the Oyinmomo podcast, Jaiye said the lack of genuine support in the Nigerian film industry is becoming more obvious, as people would rather pretend everything is fine than speak up about the problems affecting everyone.

“Our relationship is gradually breaking down… Everybody is just acting like it’s okay. How is it okay?”.

She said making a film is a major financial investment, yet many people do not understand how difficult it can be for producers to recover the money they put into their projects after cinema release.

Jaiye also questioned the way many people look up to celebrities, saying the image people see online does not always reflect reality.

“The people you’re emulating and looking at as an example, do you really want to know them? The people you call celebrities and follow on social media.”

Looking back at her own experience, the actress said she was disappointed that no one in the industry stood by her after her movie was pulled from cinemas.

“Not one actor went to those cinemas or even supported me, despite the fact that we’re all going through the same thing.”

She added that the experience changed the way she relates with colleagues. According to her, while no one showed support during that difficult period, they would still remember to send birthday wishes.

Because of that, she said she no longer wishes people happy birthday and would rather they did not wish her either.

“But If I celebrate my birthday, the next day they’d wish me a happy birthday. So I stopped wishing people a happy birthday because I don’t want anyone to wish me on my birthday. Please don’t”, she said.
