Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports claiming he was offered N500 billion to contest against Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election in a bid to split votes in the South-South
The denial was contained in a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Ikechukwu Eze, who described the claim as false, baseless and aimed at dragging the former president into unnecessary political controversy ahead of the next general election.
Eze said Jonathan never claimed that he was offered ₦500 billion to run for president or to weaken Obi’s chances at the polls.

He also questioned the authenticity of the report, pointing out that it failed to indicate when or where Jonathan allegedly made the statement, who supposedly made the offer or whether there were any witnesses.
“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present, or who purportedly made the alleged offer,” Eze said.
According to him, the publication bore all the hallmarks of fabricated news designed to mislead the public and fuel political tension.
“Jonathan was never involved in the ‘N500 billion offer to divide the South’s votes against Peter Obi in the 2027 general elections.’ Nigerians should disregard the report entirely and exercise caution by verifying sensational political claims before circulating them,” he said.
Eze further noted that false reports and misinformation often increase during election seasons and urged Nigerians to verify politically sensitive claims before sharing them.
The allegation, which circulated on Facebook on Sunday, claimed Jonathan rejected a ₦500 billion offer to contest against Obi, who was incorrectly identified in the report as the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
