Peller’s wedding to Jarvis took a humorous turn after he was left stunned by a warning about the legal consequence of bigamy during court wedding
As the couple prepared to exchange their vows, the acting registrar explained the legal obligations of marriage, informing them that anyone who violates the law by entering another marriage while still legally married commits bigamy, an offence that carries a minimum five-year prison sentence without the option of a fine.
The mention of imprisonment immediately caught Peller off guard. Bursting into laughter, he stopped the proceedings to ask why a wedding ceremony suddenly involved talk of prison.
The exchange went:
Acting Registrar: “In a competent court of jurisdiction, if any of you go against the rules, he or she is guilty of an offence called bigamy and is punishable by an offence of minimum of five years imprisonment with no option of fine.”
Peller: (Laughs)
Acting Registrar: “Elizabeth, should I proceed?”
Jarvis: “Yes ma.”
Peller: “Wait joor. Sorry ma, I get question. Na love o, why five years in prison for marriage? How prison take enter marriage?”
Jarvis: “That’s if we break the rule.”
After receiving the explanation, Peller agreed for the ceremony to continue and went on to repeat the marriage vows after the registrar, promising to forsake all other women, remain faithful to Jarvis alone, and stay with her until death.
