A Police officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, has advised members of the public not to pay money when securing bail for someone at a police station
Speaking during an interview with media personality Nedu Wazobia, Iniedu explained that many people sign bail documents without reading them properly because they are eager to leave the station..
He noted that the bail form clearly indicates that no payment was made for the release.
The officer stressed that bail at a police station is not supposed to attract any payment under the law. He therefore urged Nigerians who are asked to pay money for bail to challenge the demand and indicate that they intend to contact the Inspector-General of Police.
He said:
“Many people do not read the form they sign because it’s clearly stated there that I didn’t pay one single naira for this bail. Many will just carry it and sign without properly reading it because they just want to leave immediately. The law doesn’t allow anybody to pay for bail in any police station in Nigeria.
If you enter any police station to bail somebody and they ask for money, just tell them that you want to call the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).”
