What if Adekunle Gold had never picked up a microphone?
For the singer, the answer is simple: “Graphics.”
During a casual street interview, he was asked what he would have been doing if music had not worked out.
“Graphics,” he replied.
It is a fitting answer for an artiste whose creativity has always stretched beyond music. He even revealed that he designs his own covers.
But the conversation went beyond music.
Asked about his philosophy of life, he said:
“What you allow will continue. If you don’t want it to continue, you stop it.”
He was asked what advice he had for young Africans and upcoming creatives.
His message?
“Tell your story. Keep your uniqueness. Be true to yourself.”
No need to sound like everyone else. No need to lose yourself trying to become somebody else.
On God, his answer was equally straightforward.
“Yes, I do believe in God. God is the reason I’m here. He is the reason I’m alive. I’m thankful every time.”
Then came perhaps the most revealing question: “What has fame robbed you of? One thing being famous has deprived you ?”
His answer was just two words:
“My sanity.”
For someone who says he would have been a graphic designer if not for music, his creative instinct clearly runs deep. But if there was one thing he wanted the next generation to take away from the conversation, it was this:
“Tell your story. Keep your uniqueness. Be true to yourself.”
