The group said the move was necessary to ensure an independent, transparent and credible conclusion to the re-investigation into the singer’s death.

The UAG made the demand in a statement signed by its legal adviser, Oluwatosin Afolabi.

It also noted that the fresh investigation initiated in April 2025, following the intervention of the former Inspector-General of Police, had remained unresolved after being transferred to the Lagos State Police Command.

“The April 2025 re-investigation, initiated after the intervention of the former Inspector General of Police, had remained unresolved after being transferred to the Lagos State Police Command.

“New facts prompted the Inspector General’s investigative team to visit Lagos twice, raising prima facie issues that require the interrogation of relevant suspects.

“Further delay in assigning the case to a fresh team at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, could deepen public distrust. The officers involved in the earlier investigation should not review the same issues in order to preserve independence and credibility.

The advocacy group said the appointment of a new team was necessary to restore public confidence and reaffirm the Lagos State Police Command’s commitment to justice in the case.

“We urge the Commissioner of Police to intervene immediately and ensure an independent, transparent and credible re-investigation,” the statement added.

The group had, in a statement in May, alleged that one of the officers in question failed to diligently pursue critical leads during the initial investigation into the singer’s death, adding that key issues were allegedly left unattended.

It also claimed that the officer failed to honour a subpoena issued by the Coroner’s Court until proceedings had concluded.

The group further raised concerns about the second officer, alleging inconsistencies in his communication regarding his involvement in the case.

It claimed that while the officer initially confirmed he had been assigned the matter, he later denied knowledge of such reassignment when contacted again.

Mohbad, a fast-rising Afrobeats artiste, died in September 2023 under controversial circumstances, triggering nationwide outrage and multiple legal disputes over his estate, royalties, and paternity.
