Seun Kuti believes the regular financial assistance given to poor people is taking away some of the anger that could otherwise push them to demand bigger changes in society.
Speaking on ObjecTV, the musician said people living in poverty would naturally have stronger reasons to challenge the system around them. But, according to him, occasional handouts make life just comfortable enough for them to endure their situation rather than push for a major change.
Kuti said this creates a situation where people who are struggling may remain focused on getting through the next day instead of questioning the conditions that keep them poor.
He argued that hunger and hardship can create a strong desire for change, but that feeling can be weakened when people receive small amounts of money from time to time.
He said:
“The beggars are the ones who are supposed to be angry in order to cause revolution, but since we give them money from time to time, they are not hungry enough to be angry.”
