Marseille bans all public gatherings

Marseille has banned public gatherings between midday and 8pm following a weekend of widespread unrest and looting triggered by nationwide protests over living costs

Benoit Payan, the mayor of Marseille, lamented scenes of unprecedented violence after rioters breached city hall and looted hundreds of local businesses.

Nationwide demonstrations saw up to 800,000 people take to the streets on Saturday, resulting in more than 2,400 arrests and over 500 injured emergency workers.

French president Emmanuel Macron refused a resignation offer from interior minister Laurent Nunez following the crisis and widespread rioting.

Macron ordered a review into police preparedness and intelligence gathering, while granting local officials expanded powers to prohibit public gatherings.
