Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has approved a significant increase in the monthly allowances for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, raising payments from N4,000 to as much as N50,000.

The announcement was made in a statement on Friday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Njoku Ukoha. “In addition to the Federal Government’s increased monthly NYSC allowance of N77,000, all corps members serving in Abia State will now earn a base monthly allowance of ₦20,000. Those serving in state establishments, and particularly teaching and medical personnel, will earn an extra N10,000 and N30,000, respectively, to motivate corps members and address human capacity gaps created by years of neglect,” the statement read.

Ukoha explained that the increment complements the federal allowance and forms part of Otti’s broader strategy to strengthen youth empowerment and public sector capacity in Abia. “This marks the first major adjustment after 27 years, reflecting Governor Otti’s commitment to youth empowerment and workforce development in the state,” he said.

The statement highlighted the administration’s ongoing support for corps members, including the renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende LGA, road improvements, installation of power infrastructure, and upgrades to camp facilities, despite the camp being federal property. “Governor Otti believes that every institution or infrastructure in Abia, whether federal or state-owned, deserves attention because it is Abians who benefit most,” Ukoha added.

With the increase, Abia now ranks among states offering the highest monthly stipends for NYSC members. For comparison, Adamawa State recently raised its NYSC allowance from N20,000 to N30,000, as announced by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri during the swearing-in of the 2025 Batch B Stream I corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Damare, Girei LGA. “We are committed to improving the welfare of corps members and creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere for you,” Fintiri said.
