The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has suspended its earlier directive mandating prayer and fasting sessions aimed at seeking divine guidance to achieve food security in Nigeria

The decision comes after widespread public criticism over a leaked internal circular dated June 11, signed by the Ministry’s Director of Human Resource Management, Mrs. Adedayo Modupe O. The memo had invited directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, and value chain officers to participate in weekly spiritual gatherings at the ministry’s Abuja headquarters.
The initiative, titled “Divine Intervention for Protection and National Development,” was scheduled for June 16, 23, and 30, with staff expected to fast and attend the sessions. The circular stated:
“This is to invite all staff of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food to a solemn prayer session for God’s guidance and supporting the Government’s effort to achieve food security.”
However, in a follow-up memo, the same director announced that the prayer sessions had been postponed indefinitely. No explanation was given for the sudden reversal.
The directive drew swift criticism online, with many Nigerians questioning the reliance on spiritual measures in the face of worsening food insecurity and rising costs of living. Critics urged the Ministry to focus on practical solutions such as improving agricultural infrastructure, providing subsidies for farmers, and fixing supply chain issues.
“This is not the time for optics or rituals. Nigerians need food security plans, not prayer schedules,” one social media user wrote, echoing a view shared by many.
