Airplane tyres burst during takeoff with 119 passengers onboard

A Max Air commercial flight carrying 113 passengers and 6 crew members faced a serious issue with its rear landing gear as it took off from Yola Airport.

The Boeing 737-300 aircraft, registered as 5N-ADB, was scheduled to fly to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja when all its rear tyres burst on the runway.

Fortunately, everyone aboard, totaling 119 individuals, was safely evacuated, although the disabled aircraft remained on the runway. This has temporarily closed the runway for operations.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident through a statement from Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection.

According to the statement, during the takeoff, a loud bang was heard, which was identified as the bursting of the rear landing gear tyres. Initially, two tyres burst, followed by the other two as the aircraft tried to move off the runway.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

NSIB Director General Captain Alex Badeh Jr. will lead an investigative team to the site tomorrow morning to determine the cause of the incident.
