The Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed away at the age of 89 in Lagos State

He ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, after receiving approval from the Lagos State Executive Council in 1976, becoming the 17th Akran of Badagry. Over his 48-year reign, he was widely respected as a stabilising figure in Badagry and its surrounding communities.

Born on September 18, 1936, Oba Menu-Toyi I had already distinguished himself professionally before becoming king. He began his career as a teacher in the Badagry Division and later ventured into journalism, working with prominent national newspapers including West African Pilot, Daily Sketch, and New Nigeria, where he rose to Acting News Editor (South).

His experiences in education and the media shaped a leadership style rooted in dialogue, inclusiveness, and community development. Beyond his town, he served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, playing a significant role in traditional governance at the state level.

In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 1981 and received honorary degrees, including a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) honoris causa.

His reign was marked by efforts to promote peace, unity, and socio-economic growth in Badagry, a town of historical significance as a former slave port and the birthplace of Western education and Christianity in Nigeria. Residents remember him as a compassionate leader and father figure whose guidance helped the community navigate challenging times.
