Chimamanda Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, have issued a legal notice to Euracare Multi Specialist Hospital in Lagos following the death of their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Esege

The notice, dated January 10, accuses the hospital and its medical team of negligence in Nkanu’s care. It was issued through lawyers from a firm led by Professor Kemi Pinheiro.

According to the notice, Nkanu was referred to Euracare from another medical facility for several diagnostic procedures, including a brain MRI, echocardiogram, lumbar puncture, and central line insertion, as part of preparations for a planned medical evacuation to the United States.

The family alleges that the child was sedated with propofol and later developed complications while being moved within the hospital. They claim there was a failure to ensure continuous monitoring, adequate oxygen delivery, proper airway management, and sufficient medical supervision during his transfer between clinical areas.

The notice demands that Euracare provide all medical records related to Nkanu’s treatment within seven days. This includes consent forms, monitoring charts, procedural notes, ICU reports, and the identities of all medical personnel involved. The family also asked the hospital to preserve all relevant evidence, including electronic records and CCTV footage, warning that failure to comply could result in further legal and regulatory action.

Euracare Hospital expressed sympathy for the family but denied any negligence. In a statement, the hospital said Nkanu arrived in critical condition and received care in line with accepted medical standards, adding that it would fully cooperate with any investigation by regulatory authorities.

    • Fatal hospital negligence cases continue to be on the rise, over time, because families of these victims decline the idea of pursuing legal actions over the loss/suffering of their love ones…

I know people who have suffered the nightmare of hospital negligence and it’s aftermath…

My formal boss had a baby at a hospital here in Lagos of which she opted for C.S. by choice), as she had done with 2 earlier births.

Lo and behold; after the CS child birth, she cold no longer walk nor be able to stand up. She ended up with the help of a wheelchair to move around.

After so many weeks had passed and no improvements (rather she was getting worse), she went back to the hospital to insist that this was very abnormal, as she had had two kids prior to this one and there was no such complications…

The hospital continue to assure her that it’s normal, and that she would be fine over time (as they had been telling her all this while). But this time she insisted that she is going nowhere until they take her back to the theater and open her up to undo whatever they had done to her. They tried to hush 🤫 her up, and take her to the inner office away from the reception, to prevent other patients/visitors from hearing her complaint. But she stood her grounds and shouted even louder…

They finally took her back to he surgical room and opened her up, only to find that during the surgery they had forgotten something in her stomach. They actually forgot the net-like white goss that is used to cover big wounds before placing bandages on…

The cloth material had formed a lot of pous in her stomach – making her feel very unwell and unable to stand up or walk.

As usual, my boss did not take any legal action till date… Now, tell me why these negligence will not continue when there is no consequence whatsoever…
