Umo Eno, the governor of Akwa Ibom, has fallen victim to a scam after his WhatsApp number was hacked and used to defraud his contacts, according to media reports.
On Tuesday, several of the governor’s contacts received messages from his WhatsApp account asking them to send money to a specific account, with the promise that it would be reimbursed later.
Ekerete Udoh, the governor’s chief press secretary, clarified in a statement that the governor’s WhatsApp number had been “cloned” by criminals attempting to deceive people.
“Our attention has been drawn to a carefully orchestrated scam on some social media platforms, where criminals have cloned the WhatsApp number of His Excellency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, with the intent to defraud unsuspecting members of the public,” the statement read.
“We urge the public to ignore any message requesting funds from these imposters, as they do not come from the Governor.”
Udoh also mentioned that law enforcement authorities had been notified and are actively pursuing the criminals behind this act.
