Hoodlums pretending to be protesters have reportedly set fire to the homes of some politicians amid the ongoing nationwide protests against hunger, hardship, and bad governance in Nigeria.
On Tuesday, videos shared on X showed protesters setting fire to a mansion reportedly owned by Nazifi Sani Gumel, a House of Representatives member for the Gumel/Maigatari/Sule Tankarkar/Gagarawa Federal Constituency in Jigawa State. The youths accused Gumel of neglecting his constituency since his election 14 months ago.
In a related incident in Yobe State, another group of youths attacked the residence of a current Senator, accusing him of embezzling public funds meant for his district’s development.
Governor Umar Namadi had imposed a 24-hour curfew on Thursday following vandalism and looting during the protest. However, the curfew was relaxed on Monday in 19 other local government areas after a security review.
