Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reiterated strong legislative and political support for the proposed creation of Anioma State
He made this known on Wednesday while addressing party faithful at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Asaba, Delta State.

Akpabio stated that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains fully committed to the proposal, adding that the move continues to gain traction at the national level.
He explained that Warri is being considered as the capital of a restructured Delta State if Anioma is eventually carved out, citing its existing infrastructure such as an airport, seaport, government institutions, major oil companies, and a stadium.
The event was attended by governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states, alongside other prominent political leaders and stakeholders across the South-South region.
Describing the agitation for Anioma State as long overdue, Akpabio said the demand is rooted in fairness, improved governance, and balanced regional development.
He noted that the proposal, championed by Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North, has continued to receive attention within the National Assembly and remains a key focus of the 10th Senate.
According to him, creating Anioma State would bring both administrative and economic advantages, while also enhancing decentralisation by dividing Delta State into two functional entities.
“Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities.
“With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”
