Tension has erupted at the Wadata Plaza National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Samuel Anyanwu and Kabiru Taminu Turaki factions prepare to hold separate meetings at the same venue in a battle for control of the party.
A heavy presence of police officers, DSS operatives, and other security personnel has taken over the Zone 5 Secretariat area, while small groups of supporters from both sides gather nearby, drumming and singing as they await developments.
By early morning, members invited by the Anyanwu-led faction for its NEC meeting had already begun to arrive. Anyanwu himself got to the Secretariat around 8:50 a.m. and went straight to his office.
Meanwhile, loyalists of the Turaki faction had yet to show up as of 9:27 a.m., though sources claimed they were on their way.
Speaking to reporters, Anyanwu confirmed that he personally invited the security agencies, explaining that it is standard practice whenever the party plans a NEC meeting because of the expected crowd and sensitivity of the event.
He said: “I wrote to the security agencies and I wrote NEC on the 14th of November informing them of the NEC/BoT meeting scheduled for today. I am the National Secretary of the party and my tenure runs till December 8.”
Responding to reports that the Turaki-led group also intends to convene a meeting at the Secretariat, he added, “We are going for our meeting and we do not expect any intruder. He is coming to hold a meeting here as what?”
