Afrobeats star Asake has spoken about how deeply Lagos has shaped his life and music, describing the city as a major force behind his growth and success.
Speaking on Spotify Frequency (Issue 037), he talked about growing up on Lagos Island and how the environment influenced him from a young age.
“Lagos taught me how to be a young brilliant boy, it gave me knowledge at a young age to work hard and taught me how to be a man,” he said.
He described the city as fast-paced and demanding, adding that it helped build his resilience, discipline, and drive qualities he still carries into his career today.
Asake also expressed appreciation for his hometown, offering a heartfelt wish for its wellbeing. “May God keep Lagos for us & may it not spoil,” he said.
Now one of Nigeria’s biggest global music exports, the singer also spoke about his growing international audience, saying he is grateful his music is being embraced beyond the country.
His sound, which blends Fuji, amapiano, and street pop, remains heavily influenced by Lagos culture and everyday experiences in the city.
