Comrade Abubakar J. Abdullah, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) at Kaduna Polytechnic, has warned that all polytechnics across Nigeria will be closed by December 2 if the Federal Government fails to address the union’s demands
Abdullah explained that the union had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the government on October 6, 2024, highlighting critical issues affecting the polytechnic sector. However, he lamented that the government had not taken any action to resolve these matters.
At a news briefing on Tuesday, November 26, in Kaduna, the chairman outlined several key demands, including the immediate release of the second tranche of the NEEDS Assessment Intervention Fund, the implementation of the 25/35% salary review across all public polytechnics, and payment of outstanding arrears. Other demands included the resolution of long-standing CONTISS-15 migration arrears for lower cadres, settlement of promotion arrears, and addressing inadequate funding and unpaid allowances.
Abdullah expressed disappointment that the deadline for the ultimatum had passed without any meaningful response from the government. He emphasized that if the issues remain unresolved, a total shutdown of polytechnics will take place on December 2, 2024.
He stressed that the future of the nation’s educational system depends on the government’s prompt action and urged the Federal Government to engage in meaningful dialogue to resolve these longstanding issues.
