The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has moved closer to another round of industrial action, approving 20 university branches to issue 14-day ultimatums over the failure to fully implement the 2025 agreement reached with the Federal Government
The decision was taken during the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9, 2026.
ASUU said it was dissatisfied with what it described as the inconsistent implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement. The union also raised concerns over the government’s failure to provide the necessary subvention required for the full execution of the agreement.
State-owned universities were also affected, with ASUU faulting the governing authorities of institutions where the agreement had reportedly not been implemented.
Following the deliberations, NEC approved requests from branches seeking permission to commence the process of industrial action. The affected branches were instructed to first issue their respective 14-day ultimatums to university authorities.
The universities involved include Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; Gombe State University; Plateau State University, Bokkos; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba; Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; Abia State University, Uturu; and University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa.
Others are Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo; Kaduna State University; Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil; Northwest University Kano; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; Imo State University, Owerri; Niger Delta University; University of Africa, Toru-Orua; Bayelsa Medical University; and Taraba State University, Jalingo.
The resolutions were signed by ASUU President Christopher Piwuna.
The union directed the affected branches to proceed with strike action once their 14-day notices expire if their demands are not addressed.
