ASUU LASU declares indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Lagos State University (LASU) has declared an indefinite strike, citing the state government’s failure to implement a federal government-approved salary increment of 25 and 35 percent for its members since January 2023

A statement jointly signed by the union’s Chairperson, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, and Secretary, Sylvester Idowu, stated that the strike followed the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s refusal to implement the salary increase, which has already been applied in all federal universities and 18 state universities.

The ASUU-LASU strike aligns with the decision of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of all staff unions at the university, which includes ASUU, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT. The unions have sent letters to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and Governor Sanwo-Olu regarding the issue.

ASUU-LASU is also calling on the Lagos State Government to harmonize its members’ salary scale with that of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), which reportedly earn better pay than LASU staff.

The unions criticized the government’s failure to implement recommendations from a committee set up for salary harmonization and rejected claims from student leaders that only ASUU is on strike, clarifying that the action involves all unions.

While acknowledging that efforts are being made to resolve the issue, the unions emphasized that the strike will continue until the matter is addressed. They also reminded students that they have no stake in the dispute, urging them not to interfere in staff welfare matters.
