Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi last night visited former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai at his Abuja residence following an attempted arrest by security operatives

Amaechi was said to have visited in solidarity, condemning the move by operatives believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS).

The development followed a tense episode earlier in the day at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where security agents attempted to take El-Rufai into custody shortly after he arrived from Cairo, Egypt. The incident reportedly occurred just hours after the former governor publicly predicted he might soon be arrested.

Reacting through his media office in Abuja, Atiku condemned what he described as a “crude and unorthodox attempt” to arrest the former governor.

“While I support the anti-corruption effort in the country (having been pivotal in setting up the commission), I am worried about the politicisation of arrests that disproportionately target opposition leaders, especially the ADC since it came into being”.

“The fanatical zeal the EFCC has been going after ADC coalition figures” is a deviation from its constitutional mandate.

He further argued that the EFCC was not created to function as a political instrument of the president or the ruling party, warning, “if we continue on this path, the EFCC will lose credibility and compromise its independence.”

Atiku also referenced the Uwais Panel on Electoral Reforms, noting that it recommended the EFCC chairman be made answerable to the Chief Justice of Nigeria to safeguard the commission’s independence. He expressed regret that the implementation panel set up under the administration of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua did not adopt that recommendation.
