Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency—not on the nation, but on what he described as a “disastrous presidency,” citing worsening insecurity and economic collapse

In a scathing statement released by his spokesperson, Paul Ibe, Atiku accused Tinubu of abandoning his responsibilities during a period of national crisis. He pointed to rising violence in Plateau and Benue states, as well as fresh gains by Boko Haram in the North-East, as clear signs of the president’s failure in leadership.

Atiku slammed Tinubu’s repeated foreign trips, particularly his extended stay in France, labeling them “vanity trips” amid widespread suffering at home.

“Nigeria is in a full-blown state of emergency,” Atiku said. “What kind of leader borrows billions only to splurge on vanity trips abroad while his country bleeds?”

According to the statement, Tinubu has spent 59 days in France since taking office, a figure Atiku framed as evidence of detachment from the realities facing Nigerians.

He further accused the presidency of misrepresenting the France trip as official business, calling it “a vacation cloaked in jargon,” especially as citizens grapple with poverty, violence, and displacement in parts of the country.

The presidency has yet to respond to Atiku’s remarks, but his comments have sparked renewed scrutiny of Tinubu’s leadership and approach to Nigeria’s deepening crises.
