The development follows his election by Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council as the jurist member of the Guardian Council within the country’s Leadership Council framework.

The Leadership Council is constitutionally tasked with assuming the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader on an interim basis until the Assembly of Experts formally selects a permanent successor.

Arafi, 67, is a senior cleric and an influential member of the Guardian Council. His confirmation places him on the three-member Interim Leadership Council approved by the Expediency Council.

He will work alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei in overseeing the powers and duties of the Supreme Leader during the transitional period.
