Dive teams are preparing to search Baltimore Harbor for six workers presumed d3ad after a cargo ship collision caused a bridge collapse.
The disaster forced the closure of the Port of Baltimore and created traffic chaos in the region.
The workers, part of a repair crew on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, were thrown into the waters early Tuesday when a cargo vessel struck a bridge support. Despite efforts to locate them, the search was suspended due to dangerous conditions.
Maryland State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard plan to resume the search with divers at dawn, but chances of finding survivors are slim.
Two workers were rescued alive, but six others, including individuals from Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador, are still missing.
The cargo ship, Dali, experienced propulsion failure before the collision, prompting the bridge closure that likely averted more casualties. While the bridge was deemed structurally sound, questions arise about the ship’s safety record and inspections.
The incident not only affects port operations but also causes traffic delays across Baltimore, affecting commuters and regional supply chains.
President Joe Biden pledges federal support for bridge reconstruction as investigations into the cause of the collapse begin.
