Ojema Ojotu, the lawmaker representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency of Benue State, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC)
The announcement was made during Tuesday’s plenary session, where Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu read Ojotu’s defection letter on the floor of the House of Representatives.

With his defection, the APC now holds all 11 federal seats representing Benue State in the Green Chamber, cementing its total dominance in the state’s federal representation.
In his letter, Ojotu cited the prolonged internal crisis within the PDP as the main reason for his departure, stating that the decision came after extensive consultations with his constituents, family, and political allies.
“The persistent division within the PDP has made it impossible for me to continue as a member. After due consultation, I have decided to join the APC,” Ojotu said.
However, his defection sparked immediate controversy as the Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Madaki of the NNPP, invoked Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution, urging the presiding officer to declare Ojotu’s seat vacant since there was “no verifiable division” in the PDP.
His objection was swiftly countered by House Majority Leader Ibrahim Halims, who argued that the PDP’s unresolved crisis provided sufficient grounds for Ojotu’s defection.
Deputy Speaker Kalu welcomed Ojotu to the ruling party, assuring him of the APC’s full support.
The latest defection adds to a growing wave of lawmakers crossing over to the APC in recent months. Opposition parties have accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of using intimidation and political pressure to lure members into the ruling party — an allegation the president has repeatedly denied, insisting that “those losing members should focus on fixing their internal crises.”
