Iron ore baron Andrew Forrest says anyone who doubts the future prospects of hydrogen fuel-cell technology are “muppets” – including Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The founder and non-executive chairman of Fortescue Metals Group, known as Twiggy, has been pouring bucketloads of cash into green power.

And he made it clear that he thinks that naysayers about the role that hydrogen will play in the future of green energy are “muppets”, Aussie slang for a foolish person.

Twiggy, the second richest person in Australia with a net worth of about $35.21 billion, made the comments at the Bloomberg New Economy Gateway Africa forum in Marrakesh, Morocco on Tuesday.

“I’m a huge believer in batteries, but any muppet, who says hydrogen doesn’t have a role, is a muppet,” he said, doing a pantomime of a muppet show.

“Just to make sure that everyone got that…” Bloomberg journalist Erik Schatzker responded.

“It’s a muppet show on stage,” Twiggy laughed.

“Elon is the muppet?” Schatzker asked.

“I’m saying anyone, including Elon, including whoever you like, who says hydrogen hasn’t got a massive future, are muppets.

“Battery and fuel cells are the way of the world in the future.”

Musk is a long-time hydrogen critic and has mocked fuel cells as “fool cells”.

“It’s important to understand that if you want a means of energy storage, hydrogen is a bad choice,” he said in 2022, Forbes reported.

Musk has previously described hydrogen fuel-cell technology “the most dumb thing I could possibly imagine for energy storage”.

He has conceded that hydrogen can play a role for industrial uses such a making steel, but is sticking to his guns regarding transport.

“Some amount of hydrogen is needed for industrial processes,” Musk said.

“My personal opinion is that hydrogen will not be used meaningfully in transport. It shouldn’t be.”
