After days of online criticism trailing his controversial remarks, Nollywood actor Aremu Afolayan has found support in his colleague, Biodun Okeowo.
Afolayan had sparked reactions when a video surfaced of him praising President Bola Tinubu for helping his business during the period the UAE restricted visas for Nigerians. The comment didn’t go down well with many, who felt it ignored the current struggles faced by citizens.
Although he later issued an apology, saying his words were misunderstood and admitting the situation in Nigeria is serious, the backlash didn’t immediately die down.
That’s where Okeowo stepped in. Sharing her thoughts, she urged people to see beyond the controversy and acknowledge his remorse. According to her, while his personality may come across as playful, his apology showed a different side one that reflected regret and accountability.
She stressed that he has taken responsibility for how his words were received and appealed to Nigerians to ease up on the criticism and insults.
“Aremu is sincerely sorry. Initially, when I saw his apology video, I wanted to laugh because he’s naturally fun, but by the end, I saw a man who was truly remorseful and sober.
‘He understands that what he said did not sit well with many of us, and he takes responsibility. Yoruba ni ti elese bati mo ese e ni ese kii pe lori ikunle, Ẹ̀dákùn Ẹ̀dáríjì!
According to him, there was no intention to hurt Nigerians, but he acknowledges and apologises that it came across that way.
He has reflected deeply and recognises the weight of his words. Please let’s forgive and stop the curses! Mofi Ikunle abiyamo Bewa
He is truly sorry.”
