AFC Bournemouth have removed defender Alex Jimenez from their squad after alleged leaked messages surfaced online claiming he had inappropriate conversations with underage girls
The 21-year-old defender, who has become a regular starter under manager Andoni Iraola, will miss Bournemouth’s Premier League clash against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
In a statement released on Friday, the club confirmed they are investigating the matter.
“AFC Bournemouth are aware of posts circulating on social media involving right-back, Álex Jiménez.
“The club understand the seriousness of the matter, and it is currently being investigated.
“As a result, Alex will not be included in the squad for tomorrow’s Premier League game against Fulham and the club will be making no further comment at this time.”
Jimenez has featured in every Premier League game for Bournemouth since November, starting almost all of those matches as he established himself as an important figure in the squad.
The controversy follows the circulation of screenshots and videos online allegedly showing conversations between the player and a 15-year-old girl. Some of the leaked messages reportedly included disturbing comments allegedly written by Jimenez.
Bournemouth are currently sixth in the Premier League table with three matches remaining as they continue pushing for a European qualification spot. The absence of the Spanish defender could be a major setback for the club during the final stretch of the season, while the investigation into the allegations continues.
