The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has admitted errors in the 2025 Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) results released earlier this week and has now published corrected figures

According to WAEC, 1,239,884 candidates — 62.96% of the 1,969,313 who sat the exam — obtained credit passes in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This marks a significant improvement from the previously announced 754,545 candidates, or 38.32%.
At a press briefing in Lagos on Friday, WAEC’s Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, explained that the error stemmed from a technical mix-up in grading some serialised objective papers in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics. In the case of English Language Paper 3, a wrong code file was used, resulting in incorrect marking keys.
He stressed that the issue did not affect schools using WAEC’s computer-based exam mode. However, the grading error had initially caused what appeared to be a sharp drop in performance.
WAEC has now corrected the results and urged all candidates to recheck their results via www.waecdirect.org. Updated listings will also be sent to schools, and digital certificates will be available 48 hours after candidates confirm their results.
The council apologised to students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders for the distress caused, describing the incident as “embarrassing” and assuring that measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence.
The corrected statistics show that of those who achieved five credits including English and Mathematics, 46.95% were male and 53.05% female. WAEC noted, however, that performance in this category dropped by 9.16% compared to 2024, when 72.12% of candidates reached the same benchmark.
Dr. Dangut declined to comment on disciplinary actions against those responsible for the mix-up but confirmed “everything has now been put in order.”
The error drew widespread criticism, with some candidates who excelled in the UTME expressing shock over failing English in the initial WAEC results.
