Brennan Johnson put Tottenham ahead with a clinical strike from Dominic Solanke’s pass in the 25th minute, scoring his sixth goal in six appearances.

James Maddison doubled the lead with a shot that eluded Bart Verbruggen’s weak attempted save in the 37th minute.

However, Brighton fought back after the break. Yankuba Minteh reduced the deficit with a close-range blast in the 48th minute following Destiny Udogie’s woeful clearance.

Georginio Rutter then equalized with a composed finish from 12 yards out, converting Kaoru Mitoma’s pass in the 58th minute. Danny Welbeck sealed the win with a headed goal from Rutter’s cross in the 66th minute.

Tottenham’s third defeat in seven league games raises renewed questions about manager Ange Postecoglou’s refusal to adapt his attacking philosophy after their defensive flaws were brutally exposed.

Elsewhere, Chelsea’s five-match winning streak ended with a 1-1 draw against 10-man Nottingham Forest. Chris Wood opened the scoring for Forest early in the second half, but Noni Madueke equalized for Chelsea.

Despite having a numerical advantage after James Ward-Prowse’s red card, Chelsea couldn’t find a winner.

Chelsea sits fourth in the Premier League heading into the international break, with Enzo Maresca’s side seeking improvement.
