A renewed conversation around cancer awareness has gained traction online after Nigerian health influencer Aproko Doctor released a video urging the public to pay closer attention to early bodily changes that may signal serious illness.
The message surfaced amid online reactions referencing reports linked to late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo
Rather than focus on the circulating claims, the doctor used his platform to steer attention toward prevention, early diagnosis, and the realities many patients face when symptoms are ignored for too long.
He anchored his message on a personal memory from his school years, recalling a young man who only discovered he had stage 3 cancer after the disease had already advanced. By the time medical help was sought, the condition had significantly progressed.
According to him, the experience was not only medically difficult but also emotionally painful to witness, especially as the patient endured chemotherapy and its visible effects, including hair loss and drastic weight reduction.
He also noted that the young man faced ridicule from others while quietly battling severe pain.
From that experience, he drew attention to symptoms that are often dismissed or misunderstood; These include constant fatigue, unexplained weight loss, noticeable changes in physical appearance tied to illness, and persistent pain that does not ease over time.
He said:
“If this guy had known the signs early enough that he was always feeling tired, the unexplained weight loss, the pain that will not go away maybe he would have gone to the hospital sooner.”
In his accompanying caption, he framed cancer as a disease that often progresses quietly while still offering warning signals that people tend to overlook.
He wrote:
“Cancer is a silent thief, but it leaves clues.
“It’s hard to wrap our heads around the loss of a light like Alex Ekubo. It’s a reminder that this is a conversation we must continue to have.
“If this video prompts even one person to check a symptom or schedule a screening, then the message has done its job. Please, watch this, and don’t forget to share it with everyone you know.”
