Unveiled on May 13, 2025, the NRBVN platform allows Nigerians living abroad to enroll for a BVN without being physically present in Nigeria. The digital process includes identity verification, biometric capture, and liveness checks, all conducted remotely.

Key Features and Benefits:

  • Remote BVN Registration: Nigerians abroad can now obtain their BVNs digitally from any location, using secure authentication and compliance protocols.
  • Access to Domiciliary Accounts: With an NRBVN, users can open and operate domiciliary accounts in USD, GBP, and EUR, making it easier to invest and send money home.
  • Expanded Financial Services: NRBVN holders can take advantage of other diaspora-friendly platforms like the Non-Resident Ordinary Account (NROA) and the Non-Resident Nigerian Investment Account (NRNIA), giving them access to savings, mortgages, pensions, and capital market investments.
  • Secure and Compliant: The system aligns with international Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) standards to ensure data security and transaction transparency.

The CBN says this move is aimed at increasing diaspora remittances, with a target of attracting $1 billion monthly into the Nigerian economy. Remittances rose from $3.3 billion in 2023 to $4.73 billion in 2024, and the apex bank hopes the NRBVN will accelerate this growth.

Since the platform’s announcement, 357 Nigerians from seven different countries have applied, and 42 are currently awaiting verification. The system is already integrated with 27 Nigerian banks and two International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs).
