Chelsea F.C. have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the new manager of the club’s men’s team

The former Real Madrid CF midfielder is set to officially begin his role at Stamford Bridge on July 1, 2026, after agreeing to a four-year deal with the Premier League side.

Alonso joins Chelsea following a successful spell with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he made history by leading the club to its first-ever Bundesliga title.

In a statement released on Sunday, Chelsea said the decision to appoint Alonso was based on their belief in his tactical approach, leadership qualities, coaching ability and overall vision for the team.

Reacting to the appointment, Alonso expressed excitement about taking over at one of the world’s biggest clubs, stating that Chelsea’s ambitions matched his personal goals.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

The Spaniard added that he was looking forward to working with the squad and helping the club achieve success.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
