Former Miss South Africa contestant and reigning Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, is expected back in court on August 19 after a Cape Town Regional Court postponed its ruling in her deportation case
Magistrate Reema Khorana delayed judgment after hearing submissions from lawyers representing South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs, who argued that Adetshina should be deported.
Adetshina was arrested in Cape Town in June over claims that she was living in South Africa without valid immigration documents.
During proceedings, the Department of Home Affairs maintained that despite efforts by her legal team to regularise her immigration status, she still lacked the required documentation and should remain in detention pending deportation.
The court also heard that Adetshina is still in possession of a South African passport, which authorities claim she has refused to hand over. She is also recognised as a Nigerian citizen.
Her lawyers opposed her continued detention, suggesting she be allowed to remain free while reporting to an immigration officer every two weeks until the case is concluded.
The legal battle stems from the citizenship controversy that surrounded her participation in the 2024 Miss South Africa pageant. She later withdrew from the contest, accepted an invitation to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria, and went on to win the crown.
Court documents filed by the Department of Home Affairs further allege that Adetshina and her young son were living in South Africa without legal immigration status, with the department seeking a court order to facilitate her deportation.
