Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 and former Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina, has had her bail conditions eased by the Cape Town Magistrates Court as she continues to face charges of identity theft and immigration fraud
Rungo, a 53-year-old Mozambican national, appeared in court on Wednesday, May 14, where her legal team successfully requested relaxed bail terms. The court ruled that she may now leave her home under a 9 p.m. curfew and is allowed to attend other legal matters unrelated to her own case. She had been under house arrest since February.
Rungo was arrested earlier this year after her South African ID was revoked in September 2024. Authorities allege she fraudulently obtained citizenship by using the identity of a South African woman, a scheme they claim dates back to 2001. The Department of Home Affairs has since declared her a “prohibited person” and barred her from applying for permanent residency while her case is pending.
Wednesday’s court appearance followed a brief delay last week after the state appointed a new prosecutor and Rungo brought on new legal counsel. The matter was postponed to give both sides time to prepare.
Independent immigration attorney Stefanie Darbandi commented on the case, noting the legal complexity. “The fraud charges are being handled by the court, while Home Affairs is managing her immigration status,” she said. Darbandi added that Rungo’s willingness to cooperate with the investigation could potentially benefit her in the long run.
If convicted, Rungo faces the possibility of imprisonment and deportation to Mozambique.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to her daughter’s rising fame. Public reaction remains divided—some critics say Rungo is receiving lenient treatment, while others have called for compassion, citing the emotional toll on her family.
Rungo is expected to return to court on September 12.
