Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has dismissed claims that Christians in Nigeria’s South-East are victims of religious genocide, calling such allegations false and misleading
Speaking during a live appearance on Channels Television, Soludo explained that the insecurity in the region stems from political, social, and economic discontent rather than religious persecution.
His remarks followed recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who accused the Nigerian government of permitting large-scale k!llings of Christians and hinted at possible military intervention to “protect” them.
Soludo countered that the situation in the South-East is more complex than the U.S. narrative portrays.
“There is a deeper conversation and introspection about what goes on in the country,” he said. “In this part of the world, eastern Nigeria, it is not religious. People are killing themselves, Christians killing Christians. The people in the bushes are Emmanuel, Peter, and John—Christian names—and they have maimed and killed thousands of our youths. It has nothing to do with religion.”
The former Central Bank governor stressed that the South-East is overwhelmingly Christian, with both perpetrators and victims sharing the same faith.
“In this part of the country, we are 95 percent Christians, and the people in the bushes killing people bear Christian names,” he said. “It is wider than the categorisation of Christians and Muslims. Nigeria will overcome, and it will end in conversation.”
He added that while the United States is free to express its views, its actions must still comply with international law.
