Imagine organising an awards ceremony, arriving at the venue and then being stopped at the entrance by a security guard who refuses to let you in because you don’t have an invitation.
That was the rather amusing experience media personality, Chude Jideonwo had at The Future Awards.
The media personality recalled how a bouncer denied him entry at the 2023 edition of the awards because the security guard did not know he was one of the people behind the event. The guard asked for his IV (invitation card), and when Chude could not produce one, he was told to step aside.
Recounting the encounter during an interview, Chude said:
“At The Future Awards 2023, the bouncer bounced me because he didn’t know it was my event. He bounced me because I didn’t come with my IV.
“The bouncer was like, ‘Where’s your IV?’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, really? Where is my IV?’ He said, ‘Move aside.’
“People were shouting, ‘It’s his event! It’s his event!’ They thought I was upset, and he was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry, sir.’
Interestingly, Chude said he was not offended by the experience. While people around him thought he was upset about being turned away from an event he had organised, he saw the situation differently.
To him, it was proof that The Future Awards had grown into something bigger than its founders. He was proud that the event had developed its own identity rather than depending on his personal presence.
“I wasn’t upset; I was proud. When they bounced me, it meant I had built something so big that I could be bounced from it. And that means it’s going to last for a long time.
“I think that’s what it is. I want to build things that last. And you cannot really build things that truly last if you depend on you”, he said.
