Church Members Stage Protests Over Missing Money
Members of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), St. Matthew’s Kiangima Parish in Embu West Sub-county held demonstrations on Wednesday, December 28, over alleged misuse of funds by the church committee.
Carrying placards and twigs amid chants of protests, the worshippers demanded immediate dismissal of the whole committee.
The protests were sparked following the revelation that their Vicar who has been sent on transfer had not been paid his dues for the last two months despite them dutifully paying their contributions towards church development.
At the centre of the controversy is their contributions amounting to Ksh8 million of which they allege Ksh5 million cannot be accounted for given that Ksh3 million went towards settling of diocesan cess.
“Our plea to know why our Vicar has gone without pay for two months have fallen on deaf ears as none of our elected officials is willing to come clean over the matter,“decried member Joyce Kiuria.
They demanded to be told what became of their contributions as they resolved to close down the church until the committee is sent home to pave way for election of a new one.
“We demand that the whole committee be dismissed so that we can elect competent and reliable members of the church,” Kiuria said.
